Overview

    Video surveillance systems are made up of cameras, image data processing units, data storage devices, and the application software. The data storage devices for the video surveillance system require the provision of sufficient bandwidth as well as a minimum access latency to accommodate a massive influx of image data from the cameras. Nowadays, the performance of data storage devices for video surveillance systems has become more critical than ever. This is the result of image resolution for IP cameras and video display devices migrating towards ultra high definition (UHD) [4K or 3,840 by 2,160 precisely], the rising video monitoring requirements for cloud servers and data centers, and new features and technologies, such as IoT (Internet of Things).

    JMicron’s SATA Port Multiplier and RAID controllers have been indispensable data storage solutions to some of the major leading video surveillance system manufacturers for five years. Currently, the most up-to-date video surveillance platforms utilize JMicron’s 1:5 RAID 0, 1, and 5 controllers, non-RAID SATA Port Multipliers and Port Selectors, a four-core ARM processor, a Linux operating system, a video management system (VMS), a 1Gbps Ethernet connection, and multiple video channels; these platforms continuously operate 24/7/365 for smart express highway monitoring systems and municipal security systems around the globe.


JMicron's Solutions

    The JMB321, JMB393, and JMB394 have sustainably been JMicron’s key data storage components for video surveillance system manufacturers. In 2013, JMicron began to release the JMB575, consisting of a 1:5 and 5:1 SATA 6Gbps Port Multiplier and Port Selector, respectively. The JMB575 enables producers of video surveillance systems to include higher speed storage devices (such as SATA 6Gbps HDDs and SSDs), boost performance, and enlarge data storage capacity--all of which fit well within large video surveillance cloud systems. For public cloud storage customers, when three JMB575 controllers are aggregated behind another JMB575 (see figure below), the application is able to expand the data storage capacity to 60GB (composed of 15 SATA HDDs of 4TB each) without compromising sequential input/output performance.

    For cost-effective solutions for network and digital video recorders, a number ofJMB575 controllers can be connected directly to the host bus adapter to scale the data storage capacity from 8TB to 20TB (two to five SATA HDDs of 4TB each) without any loss of data input/output performance at 6G bits per second (see figure below).

  • JMB321 1 to 5-ports Serial ATA II Port Multiplier or a 5 to 1-port Serial ATA II Port Selector
    JMB321 is a single chip. It integrated six independent SATA channels and a micro-processor. With proper setting, the chip can be configured as an 1 to 5-ports Serial ATA II Port Multiplier or a 5 to 1-port Serial ATA II Port Selector. JMB321 contains 15 GPIOs which can be configured as various standard interfaces. It also has the capability to load external firmware code to extend its functionality
  • JMB393 1 to 5-ports Serial ATA II RAID-5 Controller
    JMB393 is a single chip, 1 to 5-ports Serial ATA II Port Multiplier with RAID function support. It is designed to provide SATA port expansion, data protection and performance aggregation at various applications. JMB393 uses JMicron's production-proven Multi-port Serial ATA PHY technology and JMicron-proprietary storage processor to provide very high efficient SATA RAID operation. With an easy configuration scheme, the device can be a pure port multiplier which provides SATA port expansion just like a SATA Hub, or hard-drive performance booster which provides a high performance device seen by host controller or hard-drive data protector which automatically backup data to prevent data loss from hard-drive damage. JMB393 also has advance mode to provide both benefit of performance boost and data protection.

    JMB394 is a single chip, 1 to 5-ports Serial ATA II Port Multiplier with RAID function support. It is designed to provide SATA port expansion, data protection and performance aggregation at various applications. JMB394 uses JMicron's production-proven Multi-port Serial ATA PHY technology and JMicron-proprietary storage processor to provide very high efficient SATA RAID operation. With an easy configuration scheme, the device can be a pure port multiplier which provides SATA port expansion just like a SATA Hub, or hard-drive performance booster which provides a high performance device seen by host controller or hard-drive data protector which automatically backup data to prevent data loss from hard-drive damage. JMB394 also has advance mode to provide both benefit of performance boost and data protection.

    JMB575 is a single chip. It integrated six independent SATA channels and a micro-processor. With proper setting, the chip can be configured as 1 to 5- ports Serial ATA III Port Multiplier or a 5 to 1-port Serial ATA III Port Selector. JMB575 contains 15 GPIOs which can be configured as various standard interfaces. It also has the capability to load external firmware code to extend its functionality. JMB575 supports cascaded mode which enables maximum 15 drives connected to one host.
